Eddy Current Dynamometer vs. Electric Dynamometer: How to Select Appropriate Testing Equipment for Engine Testing?

There's no need to agonize over whether to choose an eddy current dynamometer or an electric dynamometer when testing engines—both are core pieces of equipment, suitable for different scenarios, and complement each other.

We conducted actual tests using an eddy current dynamometer according to the GB/T 18297-2001 standard, and the results were outstanding: for passenger vehicles operating at 2000-8500 r/min, the speed error was only ±0.08%; for commercial vehicles operating at 1000-1800 r/min and 500-1200 N·m, the torque error was ±0.25%, achieving first-class accuracy; and the hybrid vehicle's "pure electric → engine" switching response was 48ms. The optimized quick-release cooling chamber also reduced maintenance time from 150 minutes to 58 minutes, increasing efficiency by 61.3%.

Electric dynamometers are equally irreplaceable: long-cycle testing can recover energy and reduce energy consumption, ultra-precise dynamic control can be adapted to engine torque calibration, and they can also meet the collaborative testing needs of hybrid multi-power sources, making them a key support for high-level scenarios.

In practical testing, the two are often used together—eddy current dynamometers are used for basic accuracy verification, while electric dynamometers are used for complex dynamic testing.
